My weekend getaway to Puerto Vallarta began like so many others. That afternoon, I got a haircut at my favorite barbershop, Barba y Barba, followed by a mani/pedi at Happy Feet. Feeling fresh, I headed to Jardín Café for happy hour with my regular bartender, Omar. After a few drinks, I went back to my condo at Cuale Condos (Best Stay in PV) to clean up and get ready for the evening.
The night started with a stop at the newest spot on the strip, Banana Factory. I ordered my usual Tito’s and soda with lemon, chatted with a server, and was finishing my second drink when I was approached by two men—the ones in the photo to the left. One, smooth-talking, asked me to join them for a drink at their table. I initially refused, but they pressed until I gave in. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that decision could have cost me my night—or even my life.
I’ve worked in the bar business most of my adult life and always stress safety to others. So when I noticed drinks already on the table waiting for me, I declined. Looking back, I’m certain they were drugged. After several refusals, I excused myself, but had a feeling they would follow me. To throw them off, I went to Corner Bar, knowing it was near closing time. Sure enough, they followed.
Inside, the two introduced themselves as “Steven” and “Ulises” (names I now believe were fake). They pushed to buy me drinks, but I insisted on ordering directly from the bartender. When shots arrived, I refused again—I’m not a shot drinker. They kept trying to engage me, even asking for my WhatsApp. I gave it reluctantly, planning to block them later.
One of them, “Steven,” suddenly sat beside me and made awkward, insincere compliments about my eyes. It didn’t feel like genuine flirting, just…off. I decided it was time to leave. On my way to the restroom, I took my drink with me, and when I returned, Steven had moved on—this time to a man I would later learn was Patrick Henry.
At the time, I thought nothing of it—just relieved their attention was elsewhere. But when I left minutes later, I saw Steven and Patrick leaving together. Patrick looked unsteady, likely drugged. I went on my way to Studs, then called it a night. To me, it seemed uneventful.
The next day, that illusion shattered.
I received a message from Jacob, the owner of my condo, asking if I was okay. Confused, I said yes. He then explained that Juan from Catrina Cantina had posted a photo of three men entering Corner Bar—me included—and asked anyone who knew them to come forward. That’s when I learned the shocking truth: Patrick Henry had been murdered. And I was among the last people to see him alive.
Meeting Juan, Patrick’s close friend, I shared everything I knew. He was devastated but determined to seek justice. He pushed the authorities, who showed little urgency, to investigate. Thanks to his persistence, this case began moving forward.
Since then, more victims have come forward, recognizing the suspects and sharing similar stories of being drugged and robbed. These men are not amateurs—they’re calculated predators.
Their apparent pattern:
What we know about Patrick’s case:
This investigation is still ongoing. No arrests have been made, and it’s believed these men may live elsewhere in Mexico, traveling to Puerto Vallarta to prey on tourists.
If you recognize them, were a victim, or know someone who was drugged or robbed in Zona Romántica, please come forward.
Juan and I remain committed to seeking justice for Patrick—and to preventing these predators from harming anyone else.
If you have any information about these suspects, think you may have been a victim or know someone that may be a victim we urge you to reach out to the us, you may reach out to us as well and we will pass on the information confidentially.
Puerto Vallarta is widely known as one of the most gay-friendly destinations in Mexico. From the lively bars and clubs in the Romantic Zone to the relaxing beaches and cafés, the city welcomes LGBTQ+ travelers with open arms. Its vibrant energy and inclusive atmosphere make it an ideal getaway for anyone looking to enjoy a safe and memorable trip.
Even in a friendly destination like Puerto Vallarta, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings. Take common-sense precautions: pace yourself with drinks, keep personal belongings secure, and be mindful when meeting new people. Share your plans with friends, stick to well-known venues, and whenever possible, explore the nightlife or public spaces with company rather than alone.
By exercising basic caution, gay travelers can fully enjoy all that Puerto Vallarta has to offer—its culture, nightlife, and beautiful scenery—while keeping their trip safe and worry-free.

4. Buddy Up – Go to the restroom or outside with someone you trust.
5. Know Your Limits – Pace yourself; stay aware.
6. Watch Your Cocktails – Don’t drink anything unexpected or altered.
